Not illustrated. 1848 Excerpt: ...explained by the passage in Horace, --" Carmina non prius Audita, Musarum sacerdos, Virgimbus puerisque canto;' and who there probably alludes to the fragment of Alcman preserved by the Scholiast on Hermogenes, p. 400, Aidwalch, of which the sense is--" Come. Muse, come, and sweetly sing; Soft's the strain, and new's the string; Oh! lead along The virgin throng." Amongst his poems, mention is made of one with the title of KoXi, u$-iTM. " The Divers;" which, says Ptolomonis Hephaestion, quoted by Photius, Biblioth. was found under the pillow of Titonychus of Chalcis, just as the Hyhristodicie, a play of Eupolis, was under that of Ephialles, and the Eunidae of Cratinus under that of Alexander the Great. Hence, from the mention of the plays of Eapolis and Cratinus, Welcker fancies that the Alcman alluded to was not the lyric poet, but a comic one of the same or a similar name, who wrote perhaps the play of The Divers; and though he seems disposed in the Addenda to repudiate this notion, he does not state what could have induced a lyric writer to call one of his pieces hy so strange a title. The fact is, he did not perceive that KoXv/ifitum is only a corruption of KoXrft/JijTai; which, says Hesychius, means those who draw up buckets from a well; and who, as shown by a fragment of Callimachus, quoted by the Scholiast on Aristophanes, (Frogs, v. 1297, ) were accustomed to sing s song called 'ipaiov, " the rope-song; ' which, as stated hy Trypho, quoted hy Athenfeus, xiv. p. 618, was sunilar to the song sung by persons at a tread-mill. For such kind of songs there was prohably a prize at Sparta; since we learn from Hesychius, that there was a contest instituted by the Lacedemonians in honour of Diana, called KaXaoiSta--a word derive...
